Okay, so, for a while now, I’ve been doing these little writing exercises whenever I can’t find myself going any further on a project. What I would do, like any other person on the internet, I would take my favorite comic characters and I would redesign them. However, I would also try to develop a back story, a series of reasons as to why this character now looks like this, or why this character doesn’t have this anymore.

These would take up time until I was ready to continue onto my other projects. But, I continued with these until I found that I was redesigning a large number of characters, enough to do this series of redesigns called “Marvelous”.

That being said, my sensibilities are not the sensibilities of others. I don’t believe that what I’m doing is any better than those being established right now, nor do I believe that what I’m doing should be the example for others to follow.

These were just fun for me and a good way to exercise both my writing and my artistic skills. I can’t really think of anything else to say right now, so here’s to that.

Edit: Oh, and also, the series will be broken up into three “Generations” and each generation will be then broken up into two parts, separated by years.

Dark Knight Rises

So, like most other people my age, and like most other people who are in fact people and not some form of robotic hive intelligence (?), I went and saw the Dark Knight Rises a few weeks back.

You may have heard of it.

Directed by Christopher Noland and starring Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Maurice Micklewhite, Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Marion Cottillard and Joseph Gordon Levitt, this movie is the last film in the Nolan/Batman saga that began with Nolan’s Batman Begins, which came out in 2005.

It’s been a while since the movie came out, and many of you reading this may have read reviews or analyses about the film by now, but I’ve sat on it and I’ve had time to really think about what I liked about the film, and for me, what didn’t work.

But the biggest fault for the movie, for me, was how it opened. You see, the time difference between The Dark Knight and Dark Knight Rises is about eight years.

Eight Years.

Between the two movies.

That’s almost a decade. But not quite.

This time difference would have been interesting, or even useful, had the filmmakers decided to do anything with it. In fact, nothing comes of the eight years, and most of the main characters are still talking about the events of the last movie, which involved Rachel Dawes, Batman’s love interest, the Joker killings and Harvey Dent’s downward spiral into madness.

After eight years, these people are talking about these things as if they had happened a month ago.

Here’s where it gets weird.

At the end of The Dark Knight, the Joker has a final monologue. His entire storyline was devoted to the idea that simple, good men and women could be brought down to the level of madness that the Joker and Batman call home after the events of “one bad day”. He cites that Arkham Asylum will have to double up rooms because more and more people are becoming their kind of crazy.

Now, I thought, with the mob gone, and Batman being the best form of police enforcement in the city, criminals would have to get crafty. Even, dare I say it, theatrical in their attempts to skirt around the rules of society.

In anticipation, I eagerly awaited what kind of villains would be used for the next film, while Batman is hounded by Gotham City Police. Only…there weren’t any.

Not a single super criminal in the span of eight years. Nothing. Unless, of course, no one mentioned it, which would be weird considering everyone likes to have expositional conversations about what happened eight years ago.

The reason this was the biggest problem for me was because the eight years was wholly unnecessary. It could have been two years, and not a single thing could have changed. It seemed like a weird direction to go in, especially after the filmmakers made Joker a herald for the super criminal.

I don’t know, but I felt that the Dark Knight Rises was a good conclusion to the Nolan/Batman saga, but without the context, and on it’s own, the movie does not stand on it’s own. In fact, it’s probably the weakest of the three films, which I think is because of the awkward attempt at tying together the plot lines of the last two movies, when the sequel set out to be different from the first.

All in all, I enjoyed the movie, but felt that, even as a conclusion, the movie should have set out to either conclude the series on a story that was only slightly tethered to the established canon, or keep the ending more ambiguous so that, if one were to go back, could continue the storyline,

I don’t know, we’ll see.
